Strange Exchange

See the tender plant called Jesus

As it grows in driest ground

Nothing handsome on the outside

No attraction there is found

For instead his face is swollen

Battered, bleeding, pain-filled eyes

Crown of thorns now pierce his temples

Who God’s Son can recognize?

He’s despised and so rejected

Man of sorrows, filled with grief

Prince of Peace by heaven worshipped

Treated like a common thief

See him rising in the garden

Hear him call betrayer, friend

Watch disciples all forsake him

Yet he loves them to the end

Follow him through darkened courtyard

Accusations falsely thrown

Testimonies can’t condemn him

Nothing sticks except his own

By an oath they press the question

Are you Christ the Son of God?

With a yes; he seals his censure

But his virtue can’t defraud

He is smitten and afflicted

Takes chastisement for our peace

Strange exchange, our Lord imprisoned

While the robber is released

See him led as to the slaughter

Like a lamb beneath the knife

He is cut off for transgressors

On the cross he trades his life

In the tomb they lay our Savior

Hope seems buried under stone

But he bursts the grave in glory

For the pure, death cannot own

Now he reaps the joy of harvest

By his love new ground he gains

Trust and take his great salvation

Sweetest fruit of deepest pain
